JournalNet Protocol Stack

What We Do

Journal Foundation publishes the privacy primitives for the post-surveillance internet. We design and maintain the JournalNet stack so every human can steward sensitive data, mirror it to trusted allies, and invite AI or applications only through encrypted capability handshakes.

Three layers. One promise.

Vaults, cipherlots, and reference implementations form the JournalNet protocol stack. Together they deliver encrypted custody, metadata minimization, and selective accessibility for AI, friends, or cooperatives you trust.

Journal Vaults

Encrypted, graph-aware data stores that keep personal knowledge in reach yet out of surveillance markets. Vaults power retrieval-augmented AI and everyday journaling without surrendering custody.

Cipherlots

Capability brokers that regulate every packet. Cipherlots govern how encrypted data leaves the vault, issuing revocable permissions for people, apps, AIs, or enterprises you invite.

Reference Implementations

SDKs, CLI tooling, and deployment recipes that prove the stack works. We maintain libraries so builders can plug into JournalNet without rebuilding primitives from scratch.

Making data collaboration optional and sovereign

The JournalNet design ensures upstream data transformers—AI models, analytics, or businesses—only see what they should, when they should. Journalzens can consent to granular flows of sensitive PII, revoke access in seconds, and audit every transaction.

By separating custody (vaults) from access (cipherlots) and implementation (apps), we make encrypted autonomy the default while keeping data useful for personal insight, cooperative intelligence, and responsible commerce.

Our active initiatives

Publish open specifications

We steward RFC-style specs for every layer of JournalNet. The repository stays canonical, and the community shapes it through transparent proposals, reviews, and governance rituals.

Maintain reference code

Journal Foundation manages the canonical repository and the surrounding tooling. From DevOps scripts to SDK ergonomics, we ensure anyone can run a vault or cipherlot with minimal friction.

Educate & advocate

Privacy is a human right and a competitive advantage. We host workshops, publish explainers, and help people discover their own power to protect data while benefiting from AI.

Guide responsible adoption

We support builders, journalzens, and partners with governance models, funding transparency, and roadmaps that invite contribution without speculation or surveillance incentives.
